Welcome to The Recorded North.
We began this blog to introduce, explore, and debate issues in Canadian Cinema. Our interest was spawned by our own inner dialogue with notions of Canadian identity, and we’re hoping to broaden our understanding of what that is, or could be, through the lens of cinematic representations of the same.
Our main focus in this diverse arena will be issues of endorsement and distribution in Canadian cinema. We want to look at how financial endorsement – government funding programmes, sponsorship, or advertising – affects what filmmakers include in (or exclude from) their work, but also how public endorsement – indirect audience support, fandom, public opinion – also alters these representations of a Canadian identity.
Based in Montreal, The Recorded North will be examining these issues through interviews, viewings, opinion pieces, as well as real-life and digital debates.
We are Erin Saunders, Kaitlin Doucette, and Lina Crompton.
